The CDA was developed to assess successful coaching behaviors. Coaching practice has had significant attention from researchers and practitioners as it has evolved as a focus of consulting practice and leadership development. The CDA assessment tool is grounded in studies that define the competencies and successful behaviors of coaches, process consultants, counselors, educators, group facilitators and others involved in the self-directed change process.
The authors - Monica McGrath, Alan Richter and Jeremy Robinson -- have integrated the concepts and theories presented by many of these studies, together with their over 60 years of combined experience in coaching, consulting and counseling to create this developmental assessment. The CDA is designed as a learning tool to help an external executive coach or an individual leader involved in coaching to identify strengths and weaknesses as a coach. The CDA should be used to target specific gaps in coaching competencies and help to define an action plan for learning and development.
